Quinta do Carvalhal

Quinta do Carvalhal is situated at the entrance of the Alentejan town of Gavião in an area between the Upper Alentejo, the Ribatejo and the Beira Baixa.

Its situation is unrivalled, allowing its visitors to enjoy the varied delights of its landscape, such as the ponds, the fields of cereals and the olive trees covering its terraced slopes.

It is in the centre of a region rich in historical remains, and we can see megalithic monuments, as well as Roman, Arab and medieval buildings, with a special mention for the Castle of Belver, which is in a unique location, being close to the ancient town of Belver and on the River Tagus.

Built in1154 by the “Ordem dos Hospitalários” to the command of D. Sancho I, it was given to that order along with the duty of looking after the entire area known as “Guindintesca”. It had a predominant rule during the Christian reconquest. Gavião received a royal charter in 1595 under the reign of D. Manuel I.

Quinta do Carvalhal is an ancient farmhouse and has been the property of the Ayres de Seixas family, for several centuries.
